For what felt like forever I tried incredibly hard to create the kind of photography I saw around me, and it always felt mediocre and forced. Then one day I just stopped trying to be a photographer and just started doing what I wanted to see. It turns out it doesn’t matter who does or doesn’t like it. If I do, then I’m satisfied.
Personally, I’m inspired by words and concepts, and more often than not I have no idea where I’m going with something when I start it. If I do, sometimes it doesn’t get there anyway! This is a perfect picture for example of that - It started with “not being able to breathe” and ended up “running from death”.

Thanks Karen, you did a great job. Nice texture and layering which adds to the creepy feel of the image. A great site to find textures is deviant art. I’ll make a tutorial on adding textures and layers to images maybe tomorrow.

Some details about the image:
Exposure: 1/8
Aperture: f/3.8
Focal Length: 20mm
ISO: 200

This photo is of DeSoto Falls in DeSoto State Park, located in northeast Alabama. This area is the last vesitages of the Appalachian Mountains. While not nearly as dramatic as the huge mountains out West, the terrain in Northeast Alabama is rolling and beautiful. The Little River, which flows over DeSoto Falls, flows for a few miles and then into Littl River Canyon….one of the deepest gorges east of the Mississippi.

DeSoto Falls is one of my favorite places. At 104-feet tall, it’s the second tallest waterfall in Alabama, but certainly one of the most impressive. I feel a sense of awe when I visit DeSoto and particularly love it when the water is roaring over the falls after a good rain.

I shot this photo with a Nikon D80 and a Sigma 10-20mm lens. This is a 1 second exposure, shot at f.14 and a 12mm focal length. I wanted to give a wide view of the falls and the pool/canyon below.

If you ever find yourself in North Alabama, I highly recommend a visit.

“Photography saved my life, when I moved from Russia to America and felt completely alone, camera became my best friend. From that moment I carried camera anywhere I go, no matter how heavy it is. This was taking in SF. Best part about SF is fog, which creates great overcast with no shadows! My whole idea was to take a shot from a different perspective, make old subject like Golden Gate Bridge look new and interesting. After about 50 pictures I found my winner. Image taking by Nikon D80 and processed in Photoshop, no HDR. I Use different processing plug in’s (check www.deviantart.com and www.topazlabs.com for plug-ins!) Then I apply multiple amounts of textures. (Most textures created by me) It’s all about love to photography, patience and hard work!

You can visit Arina’s photography site for more inspiration. Her photos are a great way to display the use of textures to add a new dimension of quality to your images.

Mauna Kea at Night

I feel kinda cheap making myself “Today’s Bacon” but I thought this was a special case.

The night sky on the Big Island of Hawaii is something to see, especially at Mauna Kea. Some of the clearest darkest sky is up there. I took the opportunity to shoot the night sky. You can try and replicate these photos as well.

Camera I used was a Nikon D80
My exposure was set for 30 seconds.
Aperture at f/4.5.
The lens I used was a 10-20mm Sigma lens and the focal length was 12mm.
My ISO was set for 3200 which is ridiculously high but needed to gather what little light was out there.

It was days after the Chinese New Year celebration started but luckily those red plastic lanterns were still there. So I got the chance to capture this beautiful atmosphere. It was my intention to include part of the Petronas Twin Towers (centre) in the background to make this photo a bit more eye catching.

faizaljoy is from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and primarily shoots with a Nikon.

Well, I had another thing in mind when I took this picture. This shot was practically a mistake. I hated how noisy it was, the fact that my little sister was a silhouette and the horizon not being aligned. I almost deleted it but I then remembered the last time i hated a picture of mine and how popular had it been after editing so i thought “why not?”

It was taken in Aruba, my favorite place in the world, specially to shoot sunsets.
I had just seen a picture of a little girl jumping with an umbrella in her hand and a beautiful sunset behind her on my pc and wanted to do something like that so i bought an umbrella and went to the beach that afternoon to wait for the sun to set.

After i edited this picture, i realized how much i loved it.. It was so different and nice! Everything that i hated before i loved it now. I felt proud of myself and my work!
Hope u love this shot as much as i do :)
