Do-It-Yourself: Miniaturizing Photos | Fake Tilt Shift

by Joe

Not entirely sure what the actual name of this technique is but for now I’m calling it “miniaturizing.”

Take a photo and using some Photoshop tricks you can trick your eyes into thinking that they’re looking at a model of an actual full sized image.

Take these two images for example:

Before

After

Here is how it’s done:

We had a “Today’s Bacon” where someone miniaturized a football stadium.

It’s usually called “fake tilt-shift” and there is of course a Flickr group for it: http://www.flickr.com/groups/tilt-shift-fakes/

    Hey nice tutorial,

One thing about your tilt shift scene….

The best tilt shift fakes occur when things that are in focus, everything is in focus… Just like a normal lens.

Look at your picture, the stop sign on the street at the back is in focus and so are the windows at the front, yet other distances lying in between these points are out of focus… clearly this doesn’t make sense.

While the technique you used in PS, is a decent way to apply the tilt shift effect it fails to account for distances that are the same.
