A lizard on a lizard, love this juxtaposition and its really a lucky shot considering the narrow depth of field. I try my best to keep the eyes in focus and this time I got lucky! Taken at the Honolulu Zoo this past May. 1/250 sec at f/5.0 with Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM on Canon 40D at ISO400. Cropped and post processed in Lightroom/Adobe Photoshop CS4.1
For other Honolulu Zoo photos, check out this gazing lizard, this beautiful pair of cranes, and this poky friend.

This was originally shot on film using a Nikon N80 and scanned with a film scanner from a slide. I think it was Velvia but I don’t recall. One morning a buddy and I drove around Palo Alto to take photos and I think this was some hill behind Roche. Not sure, but the narrow depth of field is from my 50mm f/1.4.
The larger version is much better. Click here for the larger version.

I love this photo because it felt very intimate… this was taken on the trails leading up to Manoa falls. I love the old, mossy old logs that lay along the trail and as we walked past them I kept wondering what little creatures were dwelling within. In this photo you can see some spider webs although I didn’t get to see the spider that spun them. Maybe we’ll see em’ next time we’re there.

This photo was taken on the road alongside Crystal Springs Reservoir in northern California using a Canon 17-40mm f/4L on a Canon 20D body. The rusty divider and the grit/dirt alongside the road along with the textures in the asphalt make this a favorite of mine. The composition worked out well, with the gentle curve of the road leading the eye into the shot. Some post-processing was done to enhance the mood using a tea-stain filter.

I’m not sure exactly which reptile this was, but this photo was taken at the Honolulu Zoo’s Reptile exhibit. I like the sharpness of the eye and surrounding area, and the “look” on his face was interesting. You can see more detail in this larger version.
If you like this photo, you might also like watching other Honolulu Zoo’s residents such as cranes and cactuses.

While living in Foster City (San Francisco Peninsula area), I frequently took walks along the waterways and inlets in our neighborhood. Much of it was a wetland preserve, muddy, wet, with lots of birds. This old wooden plank was used by the local kids to ride their bikes on a dirt trail, but taken out of context and in isolation it provided a pretty strong composition.

This photo was taken at the Honolulu Zoo. I’m not sure exactly what kind of birds these are but I think they’re cranes and they’re really vivid and beautiful. Wonderful plumage and colors. Did some post-work to soften and make it more “romantic”.
Here’s a photo from another visit to the Honolulu Zoo.

This is a photo of some mushrooms that were growing in my parent’s yard, photographed while we were visiting. It was a rather large bunch of mushrooms growing near/on a mango tree and they had interesting colors and textures, such a recurring theme in the subjects I choose to photograph, he he he.

This photo was taken during our vacation to Hawaii while we visited the Honolulu Zoo (back when we lived in SF). There was a garden maintained by volunteers with lots of nice plants and flowers. I was especially intrigued with the large cacti. I have no idea what this cactus is called but the flowers and colors were nice and I liked the contrasting textures. It’s pretty neat that something so “dangerous” with sharp thorns everywhere can have such beautiful blossoms. Neat juxtaposition.
